Sunday Morning Eye Candy

Okay, so not exactly eye candy - merely additional evidence of proof for the theorem -the CJs are vacationing, therefore it is raining: the second generation. Our girls, who are both teaching English in different areas of South Korea, decided to take a trip to the east coast over this long weekend. They drove through and arrived in rain yesterday to find the area was as beautiful as their information indicated. However, while the locals told them they should just stay another day and things would clear up several cellphone calls from concerned Korean colleagues told them they should return and they did. Things did worsen and the flooding necessitated that they take a particularly circuitous return route going far south as all of the main roads through and around Seoul were flooded. Knowing that their mom generally watches the BBC (and might have heard about the flooding) they called to tell me that they had returned safely to A's apartment - what good kids.

In an ideal world ...

she'd be able to take the asshole for every damn dime he has.

Update: I guess in a really ideal world Pat Fitzgerald would take care of him and he'd be spending his remaining days in an attractive orange jumpsuit.

Novak's Slime Continues to Ooze

Extra! Extra! Novak's been talking to the federal prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald, all along.
Novak's secret cooperation with prosecutors while maintaining a public silence about his role kept him out of legal danger and had the effect of providing protection for the Bush White House during the 2004 presidential campaign.

...In his column, Novak said he also told Fitzgerald about another senior administration official who originally provided him with information about Plame. Novak said he cannot publicly reveal the identity of that source even now.[emphasis mine]
Duh. So, to get Rove, Fitzgerald would likely be stuck with a he said - he said between Rove and Novak. Not exactly optimal.

Soccer and Pirates

On Sunday I went out to lunch and that pirate movie with friends so I had to tape The World Cup final. Decisions. Decisions. Do I go for lower res and tape for 3 hrs to ensure I can capture 30 minutes of overtime and penalty kicks or do I take a chance taping for 2 hours and hoping they finish in regulation. Of course figuring that both teams would do anything to avoid the match being determined by PKs, given Italy's poor record and the fact that France has, how shall I put it, a sub-par goalkeeper -I elected to only tape for two hours.

After returning from my outing I cranked up the VCR to watch the game and immediately received a phone call from Mr. CJ who's working out of town. I told him I was just about to watch the match and he informed me he had just heard the results on the radio in the vehicle and could save me the trouble. I thanked him but asked him to tell me one thing though ... did it go into overtime? Yes, he said, it ended on penalty kicks. Shit. So Italy won. Yes. All was ruined but I watched anyway.

I missed most of the OT, Zidane's headbutt insanity and all of the PKs. Okay, I realize the guy does headers all the time but smacking another person's head with ... your own, just doesn't strike me as very bright or an effective form of retribution but then maybe that's just because of my soft spot. I felt bad about missing much of the match but, then again, things could have been worse.

Update: Okay, I saw the headbutt and only one (head) was involved and also found that it was actually an act of bravery - Zidane may have saved Materazzi's life.

About the movie - it was moderately entertaining and while I recognized Bill Nighy's voice as well as his eyes in the beautiful character of Davey Jones - every time I saw

I couldn't help thinking of

What was I just talking about?

Oh yeah, that some people are not fit to be parents. Imagine the horror if these souls had been aborted. They never would have experienced this loving, nurturing environment.
A father accused of poisoning his children's soup in a scheme to sue the Campbell Soup Co. was indicted on tampering and fraud charges, authorities said. The children, a 3-year-old boy and his 18-month-old sister, were taken to hospital emergency rooms three times in January.

According to investigators, their father fed them tainted soup each time. On the third occasion, authorities said, he used the prescription drugs Prozac and Amitriptyline both used to treat depression making his young daughter so ill she was flow [sic] by helicopter to an Atlanta hospital.[emphasis mine]
No child endangerment charges?

When Latter-Day Christians Have Too Many

Offspring that is.
Here's what police say happened: The mother dropped off three of her four children at day care, but somehow she left the baby inside the van. The mother then drove to the church to volunteer. After more than two hours inside, the woman returned to her van to discover the child inside.[emphasis mine]
Only four kids so the no doubt pro-life Mormon mommy is likely under 25 years-old herself. This happens at least once around here every summer (generally not with a positive outcome). But to be fair, the mom is not always Mormon but Jesus H Christ LDS, how do you forget about one of your children -especially shortly after you've loaded them in your MUV!

No perfect parent I but my kids will attest to the fact that I never forgot their presence. Oh sure, our middle child has a tale about us abandoning her (I think it's up to a matter of days now) in the wilderness but in our defense that was a planned abandonment.

We had been portaging most of the day and while we had planned to use a site on this (Duncan) lake as our base camp we left her to hold a campsite while we cruised further up the lake to check out other sites. Hey, we left her with the dogs - our large and wonderfully protective (at least of me - in retrospect he was never all that fond of our kids) Irish Setter, Seamus, and Wile E. Whippet. At any rate we came back for her in less time than this mother for her children and she wasn't suffocating in a car-nor was she nine months old. Besides we ended up with el primo campsite and, afterall, that's what really matters.

But I digress. The point is -some people are not fit to be parents and some, knowing this, choose abortion. For others, those pro-life anti-choice obstructionists well ... suffer the little children. Lucky for this babe that her mom forgot about her in the morning rather that in the afternoon heat.

Hammered Home

I guess Tom the Bug Killer's home is still in Texas.

Viva/Vite

la France/dell'Italia

In no particular order. The final should be fun.

So I'm a cynic but ...

there'd better be an open casket for this one.

I guess I'm also a bit depraved:
That's why some of us are disappointed to know of the death of Ken Lay. Depraved as we may be, what we really hoped was that crimes of his super-size sort might bring him just a little chi-chi.
Update: Be vewy vewy skeptical, Lay was cremated.

Oo La La

England may be headed home but the French sent Brazil packing today. It was fitting that the point came from Zinedine Zidane free-kick to Thierry Henry.
